Workin' Wednesday: A Crooked Carnival

So there's this book that I've got a' brewin' in this skull of mine, and I thought I'd share a tidbit from it on this rather windy wednesday!

Once upon a time- one that is no longer ours- there was a wandering collective of misfits, known only as The Crooked Carnival. This particular circus attracted only the dreamers and the curious- the souls of all those so badly unwanted by the rigid and unchanging world around them. The kind of souls that took endless delight in all that this gathering of wonderment had to offer. It was a soul such as that who first told me this story, as I am telling it to you now.
His name was Simon, and he would be one of the many to come upon the carnival. It was a day like any other for him. He had left his apartment a little before noon to head to the market in the center of twon. He had been writing all morning and was stuck on a sentence he could just not get out. Perhaps walking in the fresh spring air would bring it out from wherever it was hiding in his brain. The sentence would remain hidden. However, a poster that he had seen in passing, while at the center of town, kept finding it’s way to his attention.
As the day carried on, Simon found himself restless and unable to clear his head, no matter how hard he tried. He set his pen down on his desk and stared out of his rather dirty window over the buildings that surrounded his. Itwn as already late in the afternoon- the sun clinging to the windows scattered over the town. With a sniff and a sigh he pushed the wooden chair he sat in back, and walked immediately to the door-not even bothering to grab his coat as the entered the darkening streets.
The night air clung warmly to his skin, unusual for so early in the year, but Simon paid it no mind. He was unsure of where he was going, but with one foot after the other he wandered along the cobblestone streets, each flickering flame of the street lamps beckoning him further and further away, until soon the cobblestones turned to dirt and the buildings to grass. Somehow Simon had made it all the way out of town and over the bridge that separated the forest from civilization.
If Simon had been able to take his mind off the something he couldn’t quite put his finger on, and took a moment to notice what was going on around him, he would have noticed he was indeed not the only traveler on this twisting trail.  Men and women, all lost in thought journeyed with him. They were not close enough to feel the presence of each other, but still walking towards the same unknown end. Onward they pressed on into the woods, deer and foxes gazing on and watching this strange parade. Within time Simon began to realize that he had been walking for the better part what must have been  of an hour and drew his gaze upward from the ground. In this moment was the first time Simon laid eyes upon the Crooked Carnival.

It most certainly wouldn’t be the last.

And that's all she wrote! Not really, but, you know.

Thriftin' Tuesday: Blast from the Past!

I had a How-Tuesday planned for this tuesday, but I've been a'cursed with a really annoying cold! Probably from hanging out with puppies in the rain. In any case, here are some of my favorite thrifting finds!

This guy wasn't technically a thrifting find. It was a someone was giving away stuff on the side of the street in front of the tattoo parlor I used to work at in Manhattan find. It's a Diana + Dreamer Lomography camera, which my friend Robin is going to teach me how to use it!

This super cute container is emblazoned with my first name, which is pretty much the only reason I got it. But now it holds my rings and makes me feel kinda special every time I see it.

It's a boot shot-glass. From Germany.
Need I say more?

This is my darling skull, that was a whopping four dollars. He even came with half a brain! And a lower jaw to boot, but moving continents, states, and countries was not kind to it. It's now in two pieces hanging from my ceiling. He's currently holding all my lucky pennies! And various other coins.

And so concludes Thriftin' Tuesday, and so I return to napping!

Musical Mondays: ingrid michaelson

This lovely little song has been stuck in my head all day! So now I'm listening to it on repeat while I goof off cleaning in my new and fancy dress! In regards to the lateness my boyfriend and I were playing some intense Super Mario Brothers, what can I say? Hope your Monday's started off with a blast!

Finally, Friday.

So how about this new posting system? I got you guys every day this week! Which is my new goal! I will be taking the weekends off to sleep and eat apples. Or work on all my projects I got going on! Either one, right?!

Currently I'm

Listening to: The Decemberists Pandora (guh, love.)

Reading: Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte (!!!!!)

Anticipating:  This Dress in the Mail!

Playing: Super Mario World for the SNES (so gosh darn good!)

Consuming: Apples upon apples! And strawberries and bananas and kiwis and oranges...

Obsessing over: Hair. I've been a red head for over a year now, people even think it's natural hair colour. Before that I was a brunet. Before that I had black dreadlocks that went all the way down my back. Before that- it was every colour of the rainbow. And was once, literally a rainbow. I was sweet, sweet 18.

But tonight! I've got some bleach and a desire from some pink hair. I'm nervous about this, because I'm picky about colours, and honestly I've really been digging this whole ocher and brown... thing... that I've got going on. But after reading Scathingly Brilliant and Dainty Squid and seeing those beautiful ladies rock their hair I've gathered the confidence that I can too!

And now I'm going to play a few games of Rummikub with my super awesome Grandmother!

Ten Things Thursday: Books!

And more books! Here are Ten lovely books that I've read or am currently reading!

1. Arkham Aslum: Living Hell

Isn't technically a bookbook, but gosh golly do I love it! It took me SO long to track this guy down, no comic book stores or even books stores seemed to have it! But at last, I found it and bought it without a second thought. This graphic novel doesn't actually focus on batman, but the villains! Which I though was pretty interesting. It introduced me to some new ones and focuses on my favorite- Humpty Dumpty.

2. Greek Romances

I so very much love Greek and Roman mythology and they fuled my Latin-learning-filled highschool years. That aside, look at the cover of it! And the printing date!! Goodness! I found this guy hiding in an old used bookstore in Arcadia, Maine.

3. Neverwhere

I'm pretty much always game for anything Neil Gaiman, this just so happens to be the latest I've read of him! I'm waiting for my little sister to come home so I can read her Graveyard Book (which I totally got her for Christmas because I'm awesome.) It's about a secret and fantastical world under London, full of adventures and betrayals and doors! (You'll get the doors bit when you read it.)

4. We, The Drowned

I'm not going to lie, the cover is why I bought this book. But I love it! I just started it a few weeks ago, and I'm slwoly making my way though it! With work I don't have as much time to read as I'd like, but I've got a long car adventure coming up, so there'll be plenty of time to dig in!

5. Wildwood

Is written by the lead singer of The Decemberists! And is illustrated by his wife!!
I'm almost halfway through this, and it is so, so good! Admittedly this is a younger audience geared book, which I'm finding more and more appealing lately- mostly because it's full of actual adventure! Nothing's lost on a drawn out love story. I'm a huge romantic, so that sounds weird to say- but so many books written today focus on the dynamics of a single relationship and that's how you're hooked into reading it, book after book. The actual story is lost on the characters and it's less of an enjoyable read for me. Moving on!

6. The Elenium

Is really a trilogy filled with Bad-Assery and knights and swords and treasure! I first read The Diamond Throne when I was in 4th grade, because I knew that my Dad had a pretty rad taste in books, on top of that my older sister would always steal his books when she came to visit- so I took that as a sign. That book is now falling apart because it's so loved and over-read. It does have a heavy love story, but to be fair the young and beautiful female love interest spends most of her time trapped in a diamond because she's sick and dying and the protagonist has to go save her! It's really just awesome.

7. The Flowers of Evil

I usually can't read poetry. Something about the way it's written, my brain just cant read and understand it. But there's just something about Baudelaire that clicks with my everything and makes me long to recite this to strangers on the street. It's just so gosh-darn moving! And beautiful to boot! And just the perfect amount of dark.

10. The Invention of Hugo Cabret

This book is half written and half illustrated with loads of amazing pencil drawings! I first saw the movie in theaters and was absolutely blown away! So naturally when working in Barns and Noble, I discovered it was a book and instantly acquired it on my break.

9. The Talisman

Is not a terrifying Stephen King book! I have an over-active imagination that's prevented me from reading or watching anything scary, because it's amazing how quickly I can convince myself that there are zombies and ghosts that are going to find me and kill me. This is another romance lacking book that's full of an amazing journey across america (and the other side) by a little boy trying to save his dying mother.

10. The Night Circus

When I first saw this book my first thought was "Oh god. Someone wrote the book that I've had in my head all these years. Ohgodohnoohgod." And I was so scared that I would be totally ripping this book off without even having ever read it. And then after months of brooding, I realized I should really get on writing my book and reading this one. They're nothing alike! Aside from both being about a magical circus, naturally. This is such a sweet and whimsical book, I enjoyed reading it so much!

Does this mean I have to read 10 more books by next month? (Maybe!) Better get back to reading then...

Workin' Wednesday: Wildly Whimsical Wonders!

Perhaps Whimsical wasn't quite the right word.
Oh well! Here's the weekly update of what I've got going on!

I really like teeth!
I've acquired a few vials from various places and have many teeth and bone filled plans for them!!

These are two more fabrics that I intend on making dresses with! Maybe a few!

And this is my new (in need of ironing) romper! It's got a few more finishing touches, but it's almost there!

Yeah ruffles!

And so concludes this Wednesday! Not too much going on here, procrastinating on stuff with more stuff, and working a lot! Our long time Chef at work is leaving tomorrow, and we're going to miss him dearly! He was a pretty rad dude. Other than that, just copious amounts of tea and patiently waiting for warmer weather!

Thriftin' Tuesday: Awesome mugs and even a frame!

Today was one of those really awesome days that started off with peach pancakes topped with strawberries, bananas and strawberry syrup. I got to pour the batter, so I made (among other things) the triforce, an octopus, a kitty, a fish- even the letter D. Afterwards,  I adventured to the Salvation Army with my boyfriend! Truthfully, I spent many a good few hours when I was younger toiling in the back of a Salvation Army color sorting and putting away things. I must say, those were good times. And it's always exiting to go back because there's something new every time! Here are my spoils for the day:

I just cannot get enough of these guys!

So cute. And this guy down here? Just plain awesome.

This here 3x4.5 frame? Was a whopping 99 cents.

And so concludes this Thriftin' Tuesday post!
